Mud Volcano in Baratang – Nature’s Geological Marvel

About the Mud Volcano

A unique and fascinating natural phenomenon, the Baratang Mud Volcano is located in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a collection of islands in the Bay of Bengal. The Mud Volcano in Baratang, considered one of the Natural Wonders of Andaman, lies just 150 kilometers from Port Blair.

Set within Middle Andaman, Baratang Island is known for mangrove forests, the famous Limestone Caves, and this rare geological marvel.

Though not dramatic in appearance, these bubbling mud pools offer a glimpse into Earth's dynamic processes and are one of the few mud volcanoes in India.

Formation & Science

The Andaman Islands lie in a tectonic zone where the Indian and Burmese plates meet. Plate subduction pushes mud and gases up through weak crustal points, forming small volcanoes. This slow process contrasts with the violent nature of lava volcanoes.

There are 11 mud volcanoes in Andaman, 9 of which are on Baratang Island. These formations are often explored during Andaman island tours.

Did You Know?
Mud volcanoes are formed not by lava, but by gas pressure, water, and sediment rising from deep within the Earth—making them unique in India.
